What’s happening
ICE detention facilities are facing a growing crisis as the detained population has surged
to nearly 50,000 people, a 21 percent increase since mid-December, under Trump’s directive to increase detentions. As facilities become dangerously overcrowded, detainees are experiencing widespread medical neglect, unsanitary conditions, solitary confinement, and limited access to legal services.
Immigrants, especially immigrants of color,
are at the highest risk, and U.S. citizens of color are also being targeted.
Marie Ange Blaise, a 44-year-old Haitian woman, was the seventh person to die in ICE custody under Trump's second term.
Blaise complained of chest pain for hours before
her death at Florida's Broward Transitional Center. According to Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick,
the only Haitian-American in Congress, "They
gave her some pills and told her to go lie down.
Unfortunately, Marie never woke up."
Another alarming case involved 44-year-old Ukrainian Maksym Chernyak, who died after suffering six seizures while awaiting hospital transfer—later diagnosed with a hemorrhagic stroke and declared brain dead.

Rather than addressing these deaths,
the Trump administration has shut down
three internal oversight offices within the
Department of Homeland Security that previously investigated civil rights violations
in detention facilities.
Human rights groups have filed a lawsuit challenging these closures, arguing that Congress specifically created these offices
to monitor abuse.
Meanwhile, ICE continues to issue nearly identical statements claiming detainees "received comprehensive medical care" despite mounting evidence of human rights abuses and putting thousands of lives at risk.
